It was fun to see where author James Herriot (Alf Wight) lived, worked, and wrote. The nearby church where he was married is nice to visit and there are nice shops and restaurants in the village. We ate at The Golden Fleece and had coffee and pastry at a bakery. The train station was about a mile from the village; we walked it, but there are taxis that can be called. The village is very walkable.

Some interesting shops, Herriots was good value for money and the walks around the town were lovely although there was snow on the ground. Good entertainment in the Golden Fleece watching the staff cock up all the orders for meals and drinks! Beware of the unpleasant traffic warden who comes all the way from Scarborough so has to earn his corn and also the pieman opposite Neros which we happen to cross swords with.Staff in Herons and the Coop were exceptionally helpful.

Thirsk is a lovely place to visit.
Thirsk is a lovely place to visit. There are many cosy teashops (Upstairs, Downstairs was our preferred choice with a great selection of snacks, main meals (including daily specials) and cakes! A great Italian restaurant (Bianco), which I can highly recommend - but do book - we booked for a Wednesday evening and it was very busy! There is also a good selection of bakeries for yummy cakes, cookies and breads! Lots of charity shops for a few bargains, Co-Op, Boots & WH Smith. There is also a large Tesco supermarket just out of the town.
A visit to Thirsk wouldn't be complete without a visit to The World of James Herriot - it was brilliant!
There is also a lot of parking, both short and long stay.
All in all a great time was had by us, and I wouldn't hesitate in returning to Thirsk again!

There were lots of local shops, cafes and a local market at the weekend. The old town centre was very quaint. It wasn't too busy or too quiet. There is a locally run cinema. It is less than 20mins on the train to York. The locals are friendly.
I liked the location of the property. It’s an easy walk into Thirsk. Parking was convenient but take care parking under lime trees as sap will drop onto your vehicle. It is a pleasant street, fairly quiet and full of character.
The home was well equipped particularly the kitchen. There was a good range of information and maps about the area with helpful tips from the owners. A variety of books and games were available and the TV is large and is a smart TV too.
The main bedroom was very attractive.
Very easy to find, close to Thirsk, easy walking distance to the racecourse. There's a pub a short walk away if you don't want to go into Thirsk centre. Also close to the rail station. We were unable to check-in at the usual time and Amanda was very helpful, ensuring the room was made ready early to enable us to have access and someone could show us where it was. Although on a main road, we had the windows open and it wasn't noisy through the night.
The chalets we booked for me and my husband and my sister and niece were absolutely spotless. They were extremely comfortable and very well appointed. The owners had thought of everything, even bringing fresh milk for our tea. We wished we were able to stay for more than one night! The location, 5 minutes by car from Thirsk town centre, was ideal, very peaceful and quiet too. Altogether, a perfect stay!
The location - just yards from the James Herriot Museum and a short walk to the town centre/marketplace.
The house itself - it's lovely and charming, I could happily live in it! The beds are comfortable, the shower is excellent and all the rooms have nice decor. The welcome chocolates were much appreciated too! I would gladly stay again if visiting Thirsk in the future.
I like the idea of a key safe. Thirsk is a very good central location and has most everything you would want. People very friendly and helpful. Interesting town too. Cottage location was great, easy walk into Thirsk and getting about to other places. The cottage is a good size for two people. The owner was very helpful. WiFi and TV very good.
Located in the centre of Thirsk within easy walking distance to all amenities and the superb North Yorkshire countryside. Geoff is very welcoming and knowledgeable about the area and beyond. We slept well in a comfortable well presented room, ate a hearty full English breakfast each morning, and look forward to returning to the Hotel again in the summer.
Large hotel (old coaching inn but extended) in the centre of Thirsk with several pubs and restaurants close by. Hotel has good bar and restaurant, serving very good evening meals and breakfast. Car parking in hotel grounds at rear. Room located as one of a few in converted mews outbuildings, with very comfortable bed.
The room was clean and contained everything we would need for our visit. We loved having exclusive access to the pool, hot tub and sauna. The grounds of the building and the location of the hotel are both beautiful. We visited Helmesley, Thirsk and Northallerton and took a lovely walk around the gardens.
This was an excellent location to serve as our base for exploring North Yorkshire. The cottage is very cozy and we enjoyed the view of the horses and donkeys from our window. As Americans, we really missed having a coffee maker--a cheap pour-over would be a nice addition to the kitchen equipment.
Highly recommend, if staying in the area would be first choice.
The room was large and comfortable with full range of tea coffee etc.
The hotel dinner menu was extensive, the service was excellent, the food of a good quality, as was the breakfast
This was my second stay at the Kings Arms after a lovely first stay. Just as before, nothing was too much trouble for the friendly and helpful staff and the Kings Arms will be my first port of call when I’m working in the area 💖
We enjoyed the warm Yorkshire welcome, the ambience of a friendly small pub hotel; the food was excellent and the little hamlet quiet and peaceful. It was a haven from a very busy week.
Free car parking on site. Easy to use shower. Accommodation shares site with pub that serves food. Convenience store next door. Thirsk town centre within 5 minute drive.
